Cloudways is different from traditional shared hosting — it's managed cloud hosting. That sounds advanced, but in practice it's much simpler than you might expect. You don't need to know Linux or touch a command line; everything can be done through a graphical dashboard.

This cloudways tutorial will take you from scratch, walking through every step from signup to a live website. Even if it's your first time with cloud hosting, you can complete the entire setup in 45 minutes.

80% of users choose DigitalOcean — best value. Recommended starting points:

💡 Not sure? Go with DigitalOcean 2GB. Cloudways lets you upgrade, downgrade, or even switch providers at any time — no wrong choice.

Step 3: Launch Your First Server

1

Choose an Application

Select WordPress (latest version) from the dropdown. Choose WooCommerce for e-commerce.

2

Name Your Resources

Give your application, server, and project a name (for identification only — doesn't affect domain).

3

Choose a Data Center

Pick the location closest to your target audience. For Asia: Singapore or Tokyo. For US/Europe: San Francisco or London.

4

Select Server Size

For beginners, start with 2GB RAM — leaves enough room for WordPress and plugins.

5

Click Launch Now

Your server will be deployed in 2–3 minutes. When the status shows green "Running," you're ready.

Step 4: Install WordPress

If you selected WordPress in Step 3, it's already installed automatically! Check Access Details for the temporary URL, admin URL, and login credentials.

Initial Configuration

You can install multiple applications on a single server — click "+ Add Application" to add more.

Step 5: Add Your Domain

Replace the Cloudways temporary domain with your own domain.

Add Your Domain in Cloudways

  1. Go to Application Management → Domain Management
  2. Enter your domain in the "Primary Domain" field (e.g., yourdomain.com)
  3. Click "Save Changes"

Configure DNS Records

Log in to your domain registrar (Cloudflare, Namesilo, etc.) and add the following records:

TypeHostValueTTL
A@Your Cloudways Server IPAuto
CNAMEwwwyourdomain.comAuto

DNS propagation typically takes 1–2 hours. Check status at dnschecker.org.

💡 Recommend Cloudflare for DNS: Free, fast propagation (minutes), plus built-in CDN and DDoS protection.

Step 6: Install an SSL Certificate

HTTPS is a must for modern websites. Cloudways provides free Let's Encrypt SSL — one-click installation.

  1. Go to Application Management → SSL Certificate
  2. Select "Let's Encrypt", enter your email and domain
  3. Check "Apply on CNAME (www)" to cover the www version
  4. Click "Install Certificate"
  5. Enable "Auto Renewal" (auto-renews every 90 days)

Force HTTPS Redirect

Enable "HTTP to HTTPS Redirection" on the SSL page, then update both address fields to https:// in WordPress → Settings → General. For more details, see the full setup tutorial.

Step 7: Performance Optimization

Cloudways is already much faster than shared hosting, but these optimizations take it even further.

1. Configure Breeze Caching

Cloudways comes with the Breeze caching plugin pre-installed. In WordPress → Settings → Breeze:

2. Enable Redis Object Cache

  1. Server Management → Settings → REDIS → Enable
  2. Install the WordPress plugin "Redis Object Cache"
  3. Click "Enable Object Cache" in the plugin

Redis dramatically reduces database queries, significantly boosting dynamic page speed.

3. PHP Version and Settings

Use the latest stable version (recommend PHP 8.2 or 8.3). Adjust in Application Settings: memory_limit ≥ 256M, max_execution_time = 300.

4. Database Optimization

We recommend MariaDB 10.6+. Cloudways already pre-optimizes the database; fine-tune further in Server Settings.

💡 Performance Testing: After optimization, test your speed with GTmetrix or PageSpeed Insights. Cloudways typically achieves a TTFB of 150–250ms and PageSpeed scores of 90+. See our Cloudways speed test for detailed data.

Step 8: Configure Backups

Data safety is the bottom line for running a website.

Set Up Automatic Backups

  1. Go to Server Management → Backups
  2. Set frequency to Daily with a retention of 7 days
  3. Choose the lowest-traffic time window (e.g., 3–5 AM)
  4. Click "Save Changes"

Manual Backups

Always take a manual backup before major updates: Application Management → Backup And Restore → "Take Backup Now".

Off-Site Backup Recommendations

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. Although Cloudways is cloud server hosting, its control panel has been carefully designed to be far simpler than managing a traditional VPS (like a raw DigitalOcean Droplet). You don't need Linux knowledge, don't need to manually configure Nginx or Apache, and don't need to manage a firewall — Cloudways handles all of that. You just point and click.

Most users choose DigitalOcean — starting from the current Flexible checkout price with the best value and stable performance. For peak speed, Vultr's High Frequency (HF) plans offer faster CPUs. For large enterprises or multi-region global deployments, choose AWS. For most personal sites and small businesses, start with a modest Flexible configuration, then scale after checking traffic, backend speed, and order volume.

One-click installs supported: WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento 2, Laravel, Drupal, Joomla, PrestaShop, Kali, and 10+ more. You can also deploy any PHP-based application via the Custom App option. Note: Cloudways is primarily PHP-focused — Node.js, Python, or Go apps may require additional configuration.

Recommended next steps: ① Install a security plugin (Wordfence free tier is fine) ② Configure a CDN (Cloudflare free = global CDN + DDoS protection) ③ Set up robots.txt and an XML sitemap ④ Submit to Google Search Console ⑤ Install Google Analytics or Plausible ⑥ Configure transactional email (WP Mail SMTP + Mailgun).

Yes. Multiple applications (websites) can run on one server, each with its own domain and credentials. Be mindful of resource allocation — a 1GB server can handle 2–3 lightweight sites, but if each site gets decent traffic, upgrade the server or use dedicated servers. High-traffic sites (50,000+ monthly page views) should have a dedicated server.
